Customized Micronutrient Solutions

Synthetic Metal-Chelates

Synthetic chelating agents and metal complexes play an important role in various fields of industry, water treatment and agriculture. Chelating agents are organic compounds and exhibit the ability to sequester metal ions and keep the ions mobile and active under different chemical conditions. This chemical property is called the chelate effect.
Chelates are characterized by strong binding affinity to metal ions, offer a good water solubility and are stable over a wide pH and temperature range. Plants, for example, are able to utilize chelated metals directly. Thus, a much smaller and accurate dosage is possible.

Aminopolycarboxylates represent important chelating agents in the industry which have gained a wide spreading in various applications:

Metal aminopolycarboxylate complexes

Photographic Industry: Ferric EDTA complexes as bleaching agent for silver oxidation.

Agriculture: Trace elements, such as calcium, magnesium, ferric, manganese, zinc, copper EDTA complexes for fertilizers.

Gas scrubbing: Ferric EDTA complexes are oxidizing hydrogen sulphide to elementary sulphur.

Industrial cleaning and process chemicals: Prevention of precipitating alkaline earths in alkaline pH values.

Aminopolycarboxylate

Water treatment: complex formation of disturbing metal ions in water (e.g. water softening by calcium and magnesium complex formation).

Paper and textile industries: complex formation of disturbing metal ions in chlorine-free bleaching processes ( catalytic degradation of hydrogen peroxide).

Additional applications are being found in cleaning and care products, foodstuffs and beverages, industrial cleaning, polymerisation processes, pharmaceutical industry and analytical chemistry.

The following synthetic complexing agents are being used for metal chelates:

EDTA - ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid - calcium, magnesium, ferric, manganese, zinc, copper

DTPA - diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid - ferric

HEDTA - hydroxyethylene diamine triacetic acid - ferric

PDTA - propylene diamine tetraacetic acid - ferric

Metal EDTA complexes are most wide-spread due to their characteristics and economic efficiency. They are being produced in concentrated liquid form as ammonium and potassium salts and in solids formulas as sodium salts.
